What makes a classic, classic?
Classics stand the test of time. Music, art, words; myths and stories, literary and historical, knowledge & wisdom; ideas & craftsmanship; celebrated achievements & traditions. These are conversations that echo in time. We call them The Great Conversation. The Great Conversation never ends. Because it’s so awe-inspiring, so beautiful, such a discovery, such a revelation… it’s just worth having. Once you develop a taste for it, you’ll never get tired of reading it, writing it, talking about it, thinking about it, imagining it, meditating on it, living with it, through it, as guide and companion.
That's what a classic is.

Myth and Wisdom

From King Arthur pulling out excalibur, to Moses standing at the burning bush, to accompanying through the Inferno, to Joan of Arc rising to defend her nation, to The Buddha leaving his palace to face the suffering beyond his palace walls, our world and imagination are saturated with images of noble acts, daring moments of courage and service, ambiguous adventures. We blow these stories up and relive them as fantasy, but every day we are offered opportunities for courage, for doing the unconventional, for risk taking, for seeking to grow rather than coast. This is the stuff of myth.
When we elevate the long term and consider our legacy and our origins, that’s myth. Myth is about telling great stories and living the kind of life that makes for a great story. Myth is about finding your voice, your words, your approach. Myth is about battle testing yourself and gaining experience and insight by throwing yourself in. And it's about realizing with humility that you aren't the first and won't be the last to go through trials and overcome them ever stronger. Study the myths and teachings of the ancients that you may become a myth yourself.
Don’t just pursue myth for yourself, pursue it for your team, your reports, your manager. Every great hero has suffered and felt like a failure. That's part of myth. But they also found faith, summoned resourcefulness, flipped walls, and came through. Be unvanquishable. And some did not succeed in the narrow sense (Moses died before entering the Promised Land) because there is no end to the journey. But they found that their commitment was intrinsically ennobling and enabled others to go the distance. Wisdom is fundamentally about humility: soaking up learning opportunities from all and turning everything, even failure, into a teachable moment. We are a community of knowledge workers. Wisdom asks us to consider what would a community of wisdom workers do?
